Jealous, but Proud Littler Big Sister
















The Scoop:

Contractions started early Friday morning. We headed right in to the hospital because of how quickly the last two deliveries went. Once we were settled in, however, contractions pretty much stopped. Breaking my water got things going a little bit, but then Noah's heartbeat would drop dangerously low every time I had a contraction. Lying down helped, but things were not progressing and it was scary to hear his little heart rate get so slow. The midwife suspected that the umbilical cord was being constricted somewhere and the best thing to do would be to get him out as soon as possible.

(Interesting side note: did you know God made the placenta to have a 60-90 second reserve of oxygen? It's built with this grace period for times like this, so as long as he was recovering quickly after each contraction, the lack of oxygen wasn't too dangerous.)

After having two quick and easy births, I was expecting the same thing this time. It was frightening to hear that things weren't going simply and we got pretty emotional thinking about "what if..." but a friend's beautiful song "Psalm 139" came on in perfect timing and the presence of God comforted us. The midwife gave me a tiny bit of pitocin to get things going faster. I was pretty scared to do this, but it wasn't so bad...it felt just like my other labors. From there things moved along quickly. Two hours later he was out! He preferred to enter this world looking sideways, with his hands up by his face and cord around his neck, but he recovered quickly. We are so glad you are here, Noah! There are so many people here who love you!
