Battle of the Bulge

Although we found Bastogne, Belgium to be a pleasant town to visit, our main purpose in spending some time there was to remember and reflect on the horrific events that occurred in that area during December, 1944, and January, 1945. Knowing that my father was there and was a part of what was happening made this visit one we will not forget. He was part of the 5th Infantry Division.

The numbers are overwhelming. Within a 5-6 week span, nearly 78,000 Americans were killed, wounded, or missing in action. The number of Belgians killed is not known. We spent some time in the Historic Center where it is possible to see many realistic exhibits from that period of history. We left with a renewed sense of gratitude for what those men and women sacrificed.
