Vlissingen to Cherain Gouvy

After leaving Veere, we spent a couple of days in Vlissingen, the seacoast town my grandfather lived in until he came to America in 1909 at the age of 23. We saw the old and the new, side by side, and watched the sun set from the deck of a restaurant recently built on the spot where I feel sure my grandfather would spend time as a boy watching all the ships come and go. We even found the exact address he had lived at just before he left although the house looked too new to be the original.

Going into Belgium, we stayed at an old school which has been turned into a bed and breakfast. We ate breakfast in the dining room which had been a school room complete with a blackboard and school desks. The town of Cherain Gouvy is so small that the streets have no names (greatly confusing a GPS system). The view of the cows was taken from our second-floor room. Very charming--except for the fact that cows attract flies and there were no screens on the windows. Next stop: Bastogne, Belgium.

Wow - love the schoolhouse dining room and Ron sitting right at the edge of the water. Those cows look pretty wilted from the heat, right??

They were! And so were we! One day we heard that it was actually 36 C; I don't even know what that is Fahrenheit (over 100, I think), but we were certainly missing air conditioning. Locals said it was the hottest weather in many years.
